Infrastructure Readiness
Checklist

A practical, comprehensive checklist for organizations assessing their infrastructure readiness — covering everything from inventory and DR to security, cloud readiness, and compliance.

30 Items Across 6 Categories

Use this checklist to identify gaps, prioritize improvements, and build a roadmap for infrastructure modernization.

  • All physical and virtual servers documented with hardware specs, OS versions, and roles
  • Storage systems cataloged — capacity, utilization, and growth trends tracked
  • Network topology mapped, including VLANs, subnets, and inter-site links
  • All software licenses inventoried with expiration dates and renewal terms
  • Asset ownership and support contacts assigned for every critical system
  • Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) defined for each tier
  • Backup schedules verified — full, incremental, and offsite copies confirmed
  • DR runbooks documented and accessible to the operations team
  • Failover testing completed within the last 12 months with results documented
  • Data restoration tested end-to-end, not just backup job completion
  • Firewall rules reviewed and unnecessary rules removed in the last 6 months
  • Endpoint protection deployed on all servers and workstations with central management
  • Privileged access management in place — no shared admin accounts in production
  • Vulnerability scanning running on a regular schedule with a remediation SLA
  • Incident response plan documented, tested, and known by the team
  • Workloads categorized by migration suitability — rehost, refactor, retain, or retire
  • Application dependencies mapped so nothing breaks during migration
  • Bandwidth and latency requirements evaluated for cloud connectivity
  • Data sovereignty and residency requirements identified for regulated workloads
  • Cost modeling completed comparing on-premises, colocation, and cloud options
  • Current bandwidth utilization measured at peak and average across all links
  • WAN and internet circuits evaluated for redundancy and failover capability
  • DNS, DHCP, and core network services documented with HA configurations
  • Wireless infrastructure assessed for coverage, capacity, and security standards
  • QoS policies in place for voice, video, and business-critical application traffic
  • Regulatory requirements identified — frameworks your organization must align with
  • Data classification policy in place — what is sensitive, where it lives, who accesses it
  • Audit trails enabled for systems in scope for compliance
  • Access reviews completed at least annually for regulated systems
  • Documentation current and ready for auditor review within 48 hours

How to Use This Checklist

  • 1.Walk through each section with your team and check off items you can confidently verify today.
  • 2.Flag any items where the answer is "we think so" or "it's been a while" — those are your gaps.
  • 3.Prioritize gaps by risk and business impact, then build a 90-day action plan.
